Impact

Social media will continue to have a large impact on the shape of Iranian and Egyptian culture going forward.

Given that social media has already become a major news source for many people as well as a way to sneak around a corrupt government, it appears that these platforms have meant more to people around the world than the creators of these websites could have possibly imagined.

Women in Egypt, for example, spend more time interacting with others online than they do with people in person, according to a study conducted by Northwestern University in Qatar.

In Iran, the impact of social media is sure to be more stunted. The Iranian government has a stranglehold on the internet there. However, among those women that used social media, many reported that the act of using social media made them feel less conforming to veil-related social norms and expectations, per a study conducted by NCBI.

All things considered, social media provides freedoms to people who didn't initially have them. As social media use continues to grow in those countries, look for more stories about people who feel freed because of it.
